Male protagonists pathetic lately?

Do all Romantic-Comedies lead to the same fate?

I dunno if it's just me, but does anyone notice that whenever harem manga/animé guys start the story off, he always gets pulled into some 'other' place/situation he isn't able to come back from (physically nor mentally)!

Examples:
-Keitaro of Love Hina
-Yukinari of Girls Bravo
-Seiji of Midori no Hibi
-Rando of Pretty Face
-Naota of FLCL
-Suguru of Mahoromatic
-Yuji of Shakugan no Shana
-Kyon of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Ikuto of Nagasarete Airantou
-Nagasumi of Seto No Hanayome
-Saito of Zero no Tsukaima

The list goes on!!!

But really: What is it with this oh-so-simple set-up that seems to stay popular? Is it the fact that people dream of something unexpected and random suddenly appearing into thier lives? Do people want to jump from routine and into unknown thrills ahead?

Maybe.

But it works, and that's that.

(Can anyone name anymore?)
